    - NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! - NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! - NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! - NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

    Introduction:
We are teams of girls from Amberfield School in Nacton. Our school yearly competes in competitions involving robotics and computing, and our teams last year participated in two worldwide competitions.
We became the National Champions of both competitions, and travelled to Atlanta in the USA in 2004, to compete in the International Finals of the First Lego League Competition. We will shortly be going to Osaka to participate in the Finals of the Robocup Junior Robotics Dance Competition.

We first discovered about these competitions last academic year, and have since been to the National Finals for both competitions, achieving several awards and trophies.

    2003:
In 2003, our Lego League team got through to the Nationals, and won an award for robot design. The Robocup Junior Dance teams also did well in the regional finals, and one team competed in the National Finals.
    2004/05:

  • First Lego League:
The following year, we entered two teams for the Lego League Competition. The 'Extra Access' team won an award for their powerpoint Presentation about wheelchair access within schools at the Regional Finals. Unfortunately, they did not get through to the National Finals, but our team, the EYE ROBOTS won both the Regional and National Finals, and we were invited to represent the UK in the International Finals in Atlanta, USA in 2005.
  • The Roboup Junior Dance Competition:
After competing in the First Lego League Competition this year, six members of our EYE ROBOTS team went on to form the team: "The FLYING HEROES", and participated in the Robocup Junior Robotics Dance Competition 2004-05.
Our team won the UK national finals; and we represented our country along with another qualifying UK team at the finals in Osaka. We won 2nd overall place in the worldwide competition, gaining 2 additional major awards.
    2005:
  • First Lego League:
In 2005, our school took on the First Lego League Challenge again, which was, this time, entitled 'Ocean Oddyssey'.
Our Team was called "The AQUA AMBERS", and we researched the effect that switching on a lightbulb and generating electricity has on our oceans' biodiversity and productivity.
We participated in the Regional Finals, where our robot qualified in its missions for the final round. Unfortunately, we did not get through to the Nationals, but achieved the Robot Construction award.

    UK NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
    ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
  • About us
  • A team of Amberfield schoolchildren (some of us who were also in the 'Aqua Ambers' and 'Phantom Phoenixes teams this year) participated in the First lego League "No Limits" Challenge 2004/05.

The "No Limits" challenge was all about how technology can be used in order to address and remove barriers for the less able bodied.

In addition to the task of conducting a scientific research project, we were required to design, build and program a robot to perform various missions. The robot missions were based on the challenges that disabled people have to face everyday, and for the research project, our team had to find out about a particular disability, raising awareness, and changing people’s attitudes about it.

We chose to investigate visual stress, as 5 members of our team experience this condition. As part of the research project, we had to raise awareness about visual stress. We felt the best way we could do this was to produce a web site for kids about visual stress, the barriers they face in school and the best ways of surviving.

We would like EVERYONE to know about visual stress and how we are helped by wearing coloured lenses!

We called our team the Eye Robots and designed our own logo, (we hope you like it!) and made lots of animated gifs:

The EYE ROBOTS Website also provides information about our chosen research topic, the condition of visual stress. It offers help and advice to those who experience it for themselves, and features The EYE ROBOTS Survival Guide to Visual Stress. ................................................................................................................................................................

    OUR ACHIEVEMENTS:

Having won the Regional title at the 2004 Eastern Regional Tournament in Cambridge, our team went on to the UK National Championship, which was held at the Ford Research Centre in December 2004. We came second on the robot table and later found out that
    we had won overall!
We were then selected to represent the UK at the International Finals of First Lego League, in Atlanta in the USA.

    UK National Champions!
The competition in Atlanta was an incredible experience, and we all learnt a great deal about robotics. After performing our presentations in front of a panel of judges, and competing on the robot table in three rounds, we came within the top 30 on the robot table, and received an award for Gracious Professionalism. We were all presented with medals, and were given a certificate in recognition of the award.

    UK NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! - Again!
First Lego League was not our only Robotics success that year! ...
    ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

  • About us
  • After winning the National Finals of the Lego League Competition, six members of the team went on to take part in the Robotic Junior Dance contest, and wrote this website as part of the design project for the competition. The Robocup Junior contest also involves designing, building and programming any number of robots to dance to a piece of music. Our team, The FLYING HEROES, made 2 robots, and programmed them to dance to the song: 'Holding Out For a Hero', which features in the recent film, Shrek 2. We choreographed our own dance routine to dance with the robots, and designed costumes and masks to dance in. We also made a poster presentation to display the work that did for the competition; designed our own logo, and wrote our website to tell others about what we have done.

    RESULTS:
    - through to the semi finals!
    - through to the finals!
Our team won the overall dance presentation award, along with 2nd place for the actual dance!
